Finding Independence

At Omaha Home for Boys, we are dedicated to providing the support and resources young people need to thrive independently. Clare’s experience at OHB illustrates the life-changing impact of our programs, made possible by the generous support of people just like you.

Clare’s journey to independence wasn’t easy. Living with her parents, she often found herself at odds with her father, especially regarding her desire to go to college. The lack of financial support and constant tension made home life increasingly stressful. “I need to get out of here,” Clare often thought, yearning for the independence she couldn’t find at home, but she just didn’t know what her next step should be.

Clare was going through an eating disorder recovery program when a staff member recommended Jacobs’ Place, OHB’s Transitional Living Program, to her. This was actually the second recommendation she had received for the program and Clare took that as a sign. She enrolled in the program shortly after.

At Jacobs’ Place, Clare gained so much more than just a safe place to live. She found the supportive environment she desperately needed, and for the first time, Clare felt safe asking for help.

Independence became a cornerstone and driving force behind Clare’s journey at Jacobs’ Place. She participated in training classes on time management, budgeting and employability. She learned how to dress for an interview and communicate professionally.

“Staff even helped me develop a plan for cleaning my room daily and doing a deep clean weekly,” Clare shared, highlighting the life skills she gained.

Since joining Jacobs’ Place, Clare’s stress symptoms have disappeared and her relationship with her parents has improved. Lesedi, Clare’s Transitional Living Specialist at Jacobs’ Place, noted, “What I think Clare needed most in her life was to grow in her own way and push herself. Since coming here, she has really found her own way and has become much more independent.”

Currently, Clare works in companion care for the elderly, a job she loves and which further showcases her growing independence. Her future goals include obtaining her CNA certification and moving out on her own.

When asked what she loves most about Jacobs’ Place, Clare is quick to praise the staff, the facilities, and the opportunities available. “Finding places to do volunteer hours and the training classes to learn new skills – it’s all been so helpful,” shared Clare. “All of the staff have been really good to me. It’s really great here.”
