A New Path Forward

A New Path Forward

When Isaac first arrived at OHB, school was the last thing on his mind. At just 16, he had already faced more challenges than many see in a lifetime. He’d been in and out of alternative schools since he was eight years old, spent time in a group home, and was recently ordered by the court to join OHB’s program after struggling with the law.

“School just didn’t matter to me,” Isaac shared honestly, starting at OHB with zero school credits.

But coming to OHB marked a turning point. Starting in the Crisis Stabilization Program and eventually moving into OHB’s Residential Living Program, Isaac found a supportive environment that allowed him to focus and grow. The time he spent in the OHB School transformed his outlook entirely. Through determination and hard work, he managed to earn an incredible 21 credits, catching up on a year and a half of school in just a few months.

“It feels good to be caught up,” Isaac said with a proud smile, knowing he’s now on track to graduate – something he once thought impossible.

The most profound changes Isaac experienced went beyond academics. Isaac’s interpersonal skills blossomed, surprising even those who worked closely with him. Carla Andreessen, OHB’s Education Director, shared a memorable story:

“Isaac approached me in a very mature, calm way to visit about something I’d said that rubbed him the wrong way. Looking back at how Isaac would have addressed this situation when he first came to us, it’s completely different.”

Isaac saw tremendous growth outside of the classroom as well. He learned not only self-control but also the importance of setting boundaries and responding appropriately – skills that will serve him well his entire life.

Another opportunity that helped Isaac develop into a mature, hardworking young man was his participation in OHB’s Skilled Trades Program. Through this program he discovered an interest in welding and electrical work and earned a sweatshirt and toolbox to mark his achievements. Isaac also joined OHB’s lawn crew and worked in the kitchen, eventually earning a promotion to lead worker on the lawn crew.

Today, Isaac stands as a role model for his peers at OHB. “I appreciate this program. It’s done a lot for me,” he shared, expressing gratitude for the support he received. He’s eager to stay focused, finish high school, and head to trade school, determined to show his family and friends the positive changes he’s made.

To OHB’s supporters, Isaac had one simple but heartfelt message: “If it wasn’t for the people who support this place, I wouldn’t have gotten the experience I’ve had here. I hope more people get to come to OHB and experience it like I did.”

Thanks to your generosity, youth like Isaac can find hope, growth, and a new path forward.
