OHB Select Basketball Takes Home Runner-Up Honors

Several youth in the Omaha Home for Boys’ Residential Care Program took to the hardwood earlier this year in the select basketball league. Youth from OHB learned responsibility and accountability as they took on teams from Ambassadors and Omaha Street School in the recreational league that aims to give youth the opportunity to participate in a team sport while also serving as a way to build character.

The league culminated on March 27 with the tournament. The semifinals had OHB easily handling Ambassadors earning them a ticket to the championship game against Omaha Street School. With only five players on the OHB team, playing back-to-back games proved to be too much for them to handle, and they took home runner-up honors.

“Select basketball is challenging and pushes these youth to become better men,” said OHB select basketball coach Zachary Myers. “Playing on the select team teaches our youth responsibility and accountability. Plus, it serves as an outlet for exercise and fun.”

Athletics play a vital role in the well-rounded approach to developing the Pillars of Character – responsibility, respect, trustworthiness, caring, citizenship and fairness – among youth at OHB.
