New Year Brings New Look to OHB’s Eppley Recreation Center

after_2The start of 2017 is bringing a new look to the Eppley Recreation Center that will have an impact far beyond the Omaha Home for Boys’ campus. Thanks in part to a $10,000 grant from the Sunderland Foundation, the gym floor has undergone a much needed makeover.

In December, the gym floor was sanded down and re-finished. After a drying process, the floor was then painted with new boundary lines and now proudly displays an Omaha Home for Boys’ emblem at center court and along the sideline. The new look made its debut the first week of January when the gym re-opened for use.

Aside from the gym, the Eppley Recreation Center is also home to a pool, weight room, cardio room and recreation/game room. The center is utilized by Omaha Home for Boys’ youth and staff as well as area schools, community organizations and sports clubs. A group of officers from the Omaha Police Department have also found reprieve at the recreation center playing weekly pick-up basketball games over lunch.

The new gym floor will soon be home to another season of select basketball. Omaha Home for Boys will field two teams and host weekly games against Omaha Street School and Ambassadors church group. In 2016, 19 young men at Omaha Home for Boys were impacted by their time on the hardwood during select basketball.

The center sees approximately 380 visits per month from Omaha Home for Boys youth alone.
